Wayne Short, Founder
Semi-retired 2007
|
Building Designer
Wayne Short began his building design career at the age of
sixteen when he designed and built his first underground
"house", complete with wood-burning fireplace, located off the
side of a nearby creek bank, utilizing scrap materials from an
adjacent housing addition. An artisan and craftsman at heart, he
pursued the study of fine art and architectural design/drafting
at Raymond S. McLain Senior High School, Tulsa, OK.
With no possibility of college in
sight, he married and moved to California where he worked for IBM as
a draftsman and then for an Architectural Design firm where he found
he could utilize his love for design.
In 1965 he moved his family back to
Oklahoma and established business as ABC Residential Plan Service in
Tulsa. One of his first projects was a 128-bed nursing home which
led to the re-naming of the business to ABC Plans, which later
became the trademark for the company's line of semi-custom "stock"
home designs.
Since that time, the company, now
known as Wayne Short & Company, has designed over 600 major building
projects -- an average of fifteen per year. Although the company is
best known for its innovative home design, the firm's projects have
included numerous commercial and industrial projects -- ranging from
airplane hangars to hospital annexes; convenience stores;
restaurants; nursing homes; funeral homes; churches; office
buildings, site planning, street-scaping, etc.
Clients have
come to depend on Wayne Short & Co. for careful planning, thorough
detailing, practical design; honest estimates of delivery time and
reasonable rates.
Affiliates and consultants
include licensed Architects, Structural and Mechanical
Engineers, Electrical Engineers and Civil Engineers, designers,
draftsmen and artists.
In 1994 Wayne relocated to Poteau,
Oklahoma, where the air is fresh and pine-scented, the mountain
views are spectacular and the fish bite (according to local
legend) nearly year-round. 2005 marked the 40th year of business
and in 2007 Wayne semi-retired, and still works from his home in
Poteau..
